چکیده

We are conducting a large program with the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to measure trigonometric parallaxes of massive star-forming regions across the Milky Way. Here we report measurement of the parallax and proper motion of methanol masers in S 252 and G232.6+1.0. The parallax of S 252 is 0.476 ± 0.006 mas (2.10 −0.026 kpc), placing it in the Perseus spiral arm. The parallax of G232.6+1.0 is 0.596 ± 0.035 mas (1.68 −0.09 kpc), placing it between the Carina-Sagittarius and Perseus arms, possibly in a Local (Orion) spur of the Carina-Sagittarius arm. For both sources, kinematic distances are significantly greater than their parallax distances. Our parallaxes and proper motions yield full space motions accurate to ≈ 1 km s. Both sources orbit the Galaxy ∼ 13 km s slower than circular rotation. Subject headings: techniques: interferometric — astrometry — spiral arm: Perseus, Crux–Scutum — distances — masers — individual (S 252, G232.6+1.0)

Trigonometric Parallaxes of Massive Star Forming Regions : II . Cep A & NGC 7538

We report trigonometric parallaxes for the sources NGC 7538 and Cep A, corresponding to distances of 2.65 −0.11 kpc and 0.70 +0.04 −0.04 kpc, respectively. The distance to NGC 7538 is considerably smaller than its kinematic distance and places it in the Perseus spiral arm. The distance to Cep A is also smaller than its kinematic distance and places it in the “Local” arm or spur. Combining the d...

A New Nearby Candidate Star Cluster in Ophiuchus at d ≃ 170 pc Eric

The recent discoveries of nearby star clusters and associations within a few hundred pc of the Sun, as well as the order of magnitude difference in the formation rates of the embedded and open cluster populations, suggests that additional poor stellar groups are likely to be found at surprisingly close distances to the Sun. Here I describe a new nearby stellar aggregate found by virtue of the p...

Micro-arcsec Astrometry of the Milky Way and Beyond

Recently we have been able to achieve parallaxes and proper motions with accuracies approaching microarcseconds using the VLBA. The apparent proper motion of Sgr A* has been measured with extremely high accuracy, strongly constraining Θ0/R0 and potentially offering a new dynamical definition of the Galactic plane. The intrinsic motion of Sgr A* perpendicular to the Galactic plane is extremely s...

On the distance to the Ophiuchus star-forming region

The Ophiuchus molecular cloud complex has produced in Lynds 1688 the richest known embedded cluster within ∼300 pc of the Sun. Unfortunately, distance estimates to the Oph complex vary by nearly ∼40% (∼120–165 pc). Here I calculate a new independent distance estimate of 135± 8 pc to this benchmark star-forming region based on Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes to stars illuminating reflection n...

VLBI observations of 6.7 and 12.2 GHz methanol masers toward high mass star-forming regions

We present VLBI observations of 6.7 and 12.2 GHz methanol masers in 14 star-forming regions, namely NGC 7538, S 252, W 75N, W 48, G 31.28+0.06, S 231, S 255, S 269, Mon R2, G 9.62+0.20, Cep A, W 51, G 59.78+0.06 and G 29.950.02. In 10 of these sources, the methanol masers show elongated morphologies in the VLBI map and exhibit linear velocity gradients. These linear structures have lengths of 5...
